Cover Photographs

The book is:  Noelle Witherspoon Arnold, Ordinary Theologies: Religio-spirituality and the Leadership of Black Female Principals  (Peter Lang, 2014).

For those interested in the minutiae of photographic creation:
  • Nikon D700
  • Sigma 150/2.8 fixed macro at f4.5
  • Natural light diffused by yellow/brownish cloth for direct/highlights and 1/60 ceiling flash sync with a STOFEN diffuser for ambient/fill
  • Custom white balance (basically I set the kelvin rating to blue, and then warmed the lighter areas so I didn't blow out the red side of the spectrum, which would have made the model, the black paper, and shadows look strange and brownish)
  • Forced -.7 underexposure (otherwise the flash would have cooled the image too much, undoing my hard work in the previous step. See the flower stem--looks somewhat brown and sepia-ish, which I did want, but I didn't want this in the greyscale elements of the photo)
  • Hand-torn bonded stock with scanned fibre paper overlayed on printed text (text is actually from the manuscript, itself. It's also used in the background behind the title)
  • Headshot printed on transparency stock (made it easier to try different positions while working rather than printing it directly onto the stock. [Strangely, when headshot is shown this way, model looks uber-pleasant. If flipped around, she looked uber-angry. I can't figure that one out to save my life...])
  • Flower was my wedding boutonniere; the gift that keeps on giving
  • Leather albums (fore and background) by Iona Handcrafted Books or http://ionahandcraftedbooks.com/
